Distillation of Therapeutic Oils
Therapeutic Oils are obtained by distillation. The plant material is placed in a container and either boiled in water or subjected to steam under tremendous pressure. The temperature of the steam needs to be carefully controlled - just enough to force the plant material to let go of the essential oil, yet not too hot as to burn the plant material or the essential oil. The steam which then contains the essential oil, is passed through a cooling system to condense the steam, which forms a liquid from which the essential oil and water is then separated. The essential oil floats on top of the condensed water and is easily taken from the top.

Solvent Extraction of Therapeutic Oils.
Jasmine, Orange Blossom, and Rose are usually known as absolute oils. The essential oil dissolves in the solvent liquid as it flows slowly over the petals. The solvent is then distilled off at a low temperature. The product that is left contains some waxes and is semi-solid, It is then shaken in alcohol where the waxes are removed, leaving a high quality flower oil known as an absolute.

Expression Method of Therapeutic Oils
The aromatic oils of Citrus fruits can be obtained by the application of pressure. This method is known as expression. The rind of the fruit was squeezed by hand into a sponge to collect the oil. Now the peel is ruptured and the cold pressed grades of orange, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit and lime oils are obtained.
